I am Bram Van der Sype, a freelance software engineer.
I build reliable, well-structured applications. I am intimately familiar with PHP, but also know my way around JavaScript/Typescript and frontend frameworks like React. I care about writing code that is readable, testable, and built to last.
Good software starts with a clear understanding of the problem it solves. I help teams think through the design of their systems upfront, using Domain‐Driven Design (DDD) principles to align the code with the business domain. I can help you run Event Storming sessions or coach your teams in understanding the business needs more deeply.
Sometimes you need an outside perspective on the health of a codebase. I can review your project and provide an honest assessment of where it stands — covering code quality, architecture, test coverage, dependency health, and adherence to general best practices. The result is a best‐effort picture of what is working, what is not, and where to focus your efforts.
Static analysis tools can surface bugs, type errors, and code smells without running a single line of code. I have extensive experience setting up and configuring static analysis tools in PHP projects.
All codebases age. What starts as clean, pragmatic code tends to accumulate technical debt over time, making changes slow, risky, and frustrating for everyone involved. I can help you understand your legacy codebase, introduce tests where there are none, and incrementally refactor towards a healthier state without stopping the world to do it.
